So much has happened since my last blog entries… so much that I did not manage to catch up on my blog. Over the past two weeks I had an omnipresent feeling that my whole life consisted of catching up. It still does a bit. But here we are: a new blog entry.. on some work I’ve been doing for a while (and which LabforCulture has been very generous in extending).

The Why and Who: Cultural blogging in Europe
The new Research in focus

Ever wondered why people write blogs and who is out there in the cultural blogging scene? With the opening up of media channels in the past five years and independent publishing becoming technically more possible, blogging has become one of the most steadfast mediums to distribute commentary. LabforCulture asked Annette Wolfsberger, a producer, project manager and researcher in the fields of media arts, contemporary & popular culture, to talk to the current cultural blogging personalities heading up cultural discourse online and we are publishing the results in the new Research in focus, “Cultural blogging in Europe”.

From April through to June, LabforCulture will publish a series of in-depth interviews with personalities in the cultural blogging scene: looking at what motivates them to post, how it affects their creativity, how they market their blog and what kind of sustainability models they employ?

The first two interviews carried out by Annette Wolfsberger begin with Claire Welsby, of InterventTech.net, based in London, who is a media producer for The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Michelle Kasprzak, of Curating.info, based in Edinburgh, who is currently a Visual Arts Officer for the Scottish Arts Council. Both blogs have been running for several years and contribute to today’s cultural scene. For Annette Wolfsberger’s next exploration into the personalities’ and drive of these online commentators: watch out for the forthcoming interview in the series with Alek Tarkowski, of Kultura 2.0, who is based in Warsaw and currently leads the Creative Commons Poland project.

Also coming up is an interactive map where you can add a link and help to create a map of the European cultural blogging scene. We will invite you shortly to add to the link or distribute it. Finally, all the Research in focus will also be available offline; in late spring LabforCulture will produce a publication of the “Cultural Bloggers in Europe”.

Before I knew that life would become exciting again in the rather near future I agreed to do a translation job for PIAS. Little did I know.. It turned out this would be my last week before heading off to Brazil as part of the organizing team of Paralelo. And that I felt I desperately needed some holiday – and should really stay for at least another week after the event. So much to long term planning.
Needless to say that when I had not heard back from PIAS until late Friday afternoon I was hoping that job had been canceled. Well – no. So I increased my translation experience supporting interviews of fragile intruiging SOAP&SKIN.

Just re-emerged after an intense week of Winter Camp in Amsterdam. Very different to participate in an undertaking like this in your own city, which makes it an intercepted experience, rather than being fully submerged.
Interesting to be part of the meta group, and due to the interviews we did with a range of participants, I did get some feeling on what was happening in some of the 12 networks during the week.
